2.38 € for 12 Cosmopolitan Eggs

How can we be inspired by the art of Koen Vanmechelen? Or better, what happens if we think along the exceptional lines set out in his Cosmopolitan Chicken Project?

The Cosmopolitan Chicken Project started by crossing two pure bred chickens (Mechelse Koekoek and French Bresse). In a next step, the resulting crossing is crossed with another pure bred, and these steps are repeated again and again. The counter is now on 18 crossings.

The story of the crossings in the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project has been like a world travel encompassing 18 countries until now from Belgium, France, United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Netherland, Mexico, Thailand, Brazil, Turkey, Cuba, Italy, Russia, China, Egypt, Senegal, Slovenia and Austria. And the journey still continues.

Koen once said: “We created in every country a chicken that says something specific about this country. As a matter of fact, we create a mirror of ourselves.” and also “For me, I see the egg as the metaphor of our world.”

Following the idea that the chicken says something specific about a country, we can consider money and monetary value also as something specific to that country. That’s the reason I got the idea of checking out what is the price of eggs in the different countries, visited by Koen his project. See table 1.

Table  1: Prices of 12  eggs in the different countries visited by Cosmopolitan Chicken Project and calculated mean price after each crossing

When following the logic of Koen’s project we (financially) cross the price of eggs of the Mechelse Koekoek (Belgium, 2.37€) with the Bresse (France, 2.62 €) resulting in a price 2.50 € for eggs of the Mechelse Bresse (=the crossing). We then go on crossing the Mechelse Bresse with a chicken from the United Kingdom (English Redcap, 2.97 €) etc., until we reach the last chicken crossing (Mechelse Sulmtaler) with a price of 2.38 €. This is the current price of a cosmopolitan chicken egg.

So what is the message of this exercise?

When following the biologic approach of a crossing each parent contributes to the same amount in the genetic information of the offspring.

If one parent is a Cosmopolitan Chicken (containing information about previous generations) and the other one, the new one, is a pure breed, this last one will contribute for 50% of the information, while all the information contained in the Cosmopolitan Chicken accounts for 50%.repliche orologi New information overrules the total of old information by 50%.

Is this not exactly what is happening in our culture, in our society today?
